Olympic Games and NBA: Towards a calendar conflict
NBA commissioner Adam Silver said yesterday that the best-case scenario 2020-21 NBA Championship will not start until January, and he acknowledged that the later schedule could mean the best American players will go.miss the Tokyo Olympics next summer.
“I still believe we're going to be better in January,” Adam Silver told CNN.“The goal for us next season is to play a standard season… a season of 82 games and the playoffs.Plus, the goal would be to play home arena games in front of the fans, but there is still a lot to learn.”
The rescheduled Tokyo Olympics are scheduled to start on July 23 and end on August 8 with a preliminary TQO in June from which France is exempt thanks to its bronze medal at the World Cup in China in 2019.
“There are a lot of great American players out there, and we might be faced with a scenario where the top 15 players in the NBA are not competing in the Olympics, but other great American players are competing,” Silver said.“And obviously there are a lot of NBA players competing in the Olympics for other countries. It's something we're going to have to work on.”
Several NBA coaches are also planning to train at the Tokyo Olympics or in qualifying: Gregg Popovich of San Antonio will coach USA Basketball and will be assisted by Steve Kerr of Golden State and Lloyd Pierce of Atlanta; Golden State coach Mike Brown expected to coach Nigeria; Toronto assistant Sergio Scariolo will coach Spain and Raptors coach Nick Nurse will coach Canada in qualifying and then in the Olympics if he qualifies.
